Exploitation and effective altruism

چکیده
How could it be wrong to exploit – say, by paying sweatshop wages if the exploited party benefits? do something gratuitously bad like giving a wasteful charity that is better than permissibly doing nothing? Joe Horton argues these puzzles, known as Exploitation Problem and All or Nothing Problem, have no unified answer. I propose one pose challenge for Horton’s take on Problem.

Exploitation, Altruism, and Social Welfare: An Economic Exploration
Child labor is often condemned as a form of exploitation. I explore how the notion of exploitation, as used in everyday language, can be made precise in economic models of child labor. Exploitation is defined relative to a specific social welfare function. I first show that under the standard dynastic social welfare function, which is commonly applied to intergenerational models, child labor is...
متن کاملThe Institutional Critique of Effective Altruism
In recent years, the effective altruism movement has generated much discussion about the ways in which we can most effectively improve the lives of the global poor, and pursue other morally important goals. One of the most common criticisms of the movement is that it has unjustifiably neglected issues related to institutional change that could address the root causes of poverty, and instead foc...
متن کاملEffective Exploitation of Parallelism in NLP
The increasing demand for accuracy and robustness for today’s natural language processing systems brings on an increasing demand for computing power. Experiments on our unification-based parser indicated that only fine-grained parallelism could yield acceptable speedup. We present a parallelization technique to exploit this fine-grained parallelism. Although the approach was designed for the pa...

The objective of the NANOS project is to investigate possible ways to accomplish both high system throughput and application performance for parallel applications in multiprogrammed environments on shared–memory multiprocessors. The target of the project has been the development of a complete environment in which interactions between mechanisms and policies at different levels (application, com...
متن کاملKin altruism, reciprocal altruism and social discounting
According to evolutionary psychologists, human pro-social behaviour is regulated by evolutionarily developed psychological mechanisms whose role is to solve adaptive problems. The same reasoning can be applied to social discounting, i.e. subjective devaluation of a reward which must be shared with one or more people. Based on reciprocal altruism and inclusive fitness theories, hypotheses were f...
